Hi Team
A quick introduction I am not a surveyor I any way shape or form just a humble cabinet maker who earns his daily curst from my own workshop producing bespoke cabinetry and such like.
I am in the process of setting up another website dedicated to offering the DIYer down loaded-able printable joinery and cabinetry guides. In offering this service I believe that the terminology must be correct. On each of the guides it is proposed to put a mini glossary of terms to help the guide to be of more help.
But I have a dilemma with one of the guides and I thought you quantity surveyors out there could lead a helping hand.
In Carpentry what is the difference between a batten and a bearer?
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.
Would this be a good description?
Bearer a term used for a batten in first fix carpentry or roofing which is normally concealed i.e. sawn timber not planed or machined timber.
Batten a term used for a bearer in 2nd fix carpentry that is concealed or visible and usually planned or machined timber.
In the enclosed drawing I have described the timber supporting the plywood as bearers is this correct?
The site is very much in the very early stages of development and a lot of the links are not working.
If you have any suggestions what else can be offered on the site to make it or more use including suggesting for any guides I am all hears.
